Peyzac Le Moustier
Valley Vézère cliffs and hills of the Perigord.
This is the heritage of the town of Peyzac-Le Moustier founded in 1793 by the meeting of the parishes of St Peter's Peyzac, La Roque Saint Christophe Moustier and St. Robert as the Peyzac-of-Montignac, name Current dating from 1925.
Halfway Montignac-sur-Vézère and Eyzies de Tayac, the town is well served by 14km of county roads that intersect at Moustier to span Vézère. This network is supplemented by 5 km of local roads and 20 km of rural roads for the most recorded in PDIPR that allow fans walking and hiking to engage in calm, walking or observation plant and fauna.
Undoubtedly the reputation of the town of Peyzac-Le Moustier is due:
ü the impressive cave site of La Roque Saint-Christophe Inhabited since prehistoric times, the fort was founded in the tenth century to resist invasions of Vikings and was razed in 1588 by order of the Seneschal of Perigord after changing to control many times.
ü In the prehistoric world famous Moustier, explored in 1863 which gave its name to an era (the Mousterian) and an industry dated from 80 000 to 40 000 years.
ü More recently, Vézère was a channel of communication for deployment and recovery products of everyday life and the terrible guns cocked navy of the seventeenth century and were loaded at the port of Le Moustier.
Prehistoric heritage
The town is rich in prehistoric remains. The eponymous site of Le Moustier is known worldwide. The burial of a Neanderthal man was discovered there. A Longueroche a rock shelter was occupied in Magdalenian 12,000 years ago and Fontgal another dating from the Gravettian to 25,000 years before our era.
