Le gouffre de Proumeyssac
The 'gouffre de Proumeyssac' is one of the jewel of the département of la Dordogne. It is one of the French geologic masterpieces. Its visit will be one of the most unforgettable moments of your holiday in Dordogne.
Le Gouffre de Proumeyssac: a Geologic explanation
The limestone ground and the water flowing have created the underground caves and caused different breakdowns. Then, spring waters have gone on infiltrating into the cave. Calcite has been formed along the walls and has shaped different concretions (the most famous are the stalactites and stalagmites).
Le gouffre de Proumeyssac: the history of its discovery
The 'gouffre de Proumeyssac' has been known since the 17th century. At this time, people thought it was a former volcano. In fact, some hot and wet air- kind of water streams- came out of the volcano at winter time. Different legends were known about the “hole”, so it was later covered by a built vault. In 1907, the vault fell down and the abyss was explored by Mr Galou. Then Mr. Francès and Mr Soulié opened the site to visitors.
