Important information for the visit of Font de Gaume and Combarelles

How visiting the Font de Gaume Cave?

Font de Gaume is the last painted cave of polychrome paintings opened to the public in the world.

Indeed, Altamira, in Spain and Lascaux have been closed to be preserved. 

Fortunately, facsimiles or reproductions had to be built to enable people to rediscover these treasures.

The site of Font de Gaume can host 120 visitors a day. Groups of 12 people are composed for each visits.

90 tickets are sold on reservation (several months before the visit during the High season)

You have to add an extra charge of 1.50€ for a booking.

30 tickets are sold every morning to visit the site that same day. The ticket office opens at 9.30pm , but at summer time, we advise you to go to the ticket office as soon as 8.30-8.45am.

You may wait for an hour or so in front of a closed door but this is the best way to get your ticket to discover these precious sesames!

You will be told the time for your visit and you will have to arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of the visit. Meanwhile, you will be able to get further information at the « Centre d'Accueil de la Préhistoire » in the Eyzies or visit the national Museum of Prehistoric Times or the Pataud shelter.

How visiting the Combarelles Cave?

At the ticket office, tickets are also sold for the Combarelles Cave. There are no ticket selling at the entrance of the Combarelles Site. There is no point in going there without tickets. Groups of 6 people are composed for each visit and there are only 60 entrances available a day. Paradoxically, it is easier to go to the Combarelles Cave than to the Font de Gaume Cave to admire the magnificent engravings.
