Fleurac
This village built on a hillside was originally the property of a Gallo-roman called Fleurus.
In the centre there is a Templar church dating from the 12th and 15th century with its fortified bellwall, restored in the 19th century, and its defensive vaulting above the choir. There is also a surviving square tower which today forms the sanctuary.
This small village shelters several castles:
• Château Malbec, 16th – 17thcentury
• Château Cluzeau, 17th – 18th century
• Château Souffron, 17th - 19th century
• Château Le Peuch, 18th century
• Château de Fleurac, early 20th century
The viticulture of Fleurac
In the 16th and 17th century, the area of Fleurac produced an high quality and tasty wine. The puissant lords of the epoch made the most of a profit. We exported the wine until Holland.
Around the 1880, after the crisis of Philloxera, a fifty ha of wine had been replanted. One produced red wine and renowned sweet white wine. The production knew a peak between the 2 World Wars. Any classification of wine have been possible, the production knew a running out of steam during the fifties. The vineyard had been dug out at the end of the sixties.
Every autumn, the Festival of the harvest commemorates this moment.
