The Dordogne Valley

Along 475km, the Dordogne river flows along slopes representing 24.500km2. From the heart of the Auvergnat Massif in the Mont Dore, it crosses the Black Périgord from East to West.

Along the  meanders dotted with small luxuriant islands, the Dordogne river is dominated either by ochre cliffs ( les cingles),or bordered by the Forest or natural beaches.

The Dordogne river is a waterway between the Centre of France and Bordeaux (Celtic origin from Du-unna means Fast water). It was an obstacle during the Hundred Years' War.

A tax was taken by the feudal Lords on each good transported by the gabares (kind of boat that you can see in Beynac for example)
